Continuing the 'Dales 30'
(Fells over 2000ft in the Yorkshire Dales National Park)
East Baugh fell etc from Garsdale to Cautley 9.5miles 1500ft
Garsdale Head railway viaduct after gaining height out of the dale
Zooming in on Garsdale Head station....
....and a train on the Settle to Carlisle line
I arrived at the insignificant summit cairn on East Baugh fell 2224ft. just as Simon from Reading appeared from the opposite direction. He was the only other person I met that day on the walk!
Only a short walk further on was the trig point on Knoutberry Haw summit 2218ft, only 6ft less but not considered a 'Dales 30' because of its close proximity to East Baugh summit.
I left the summit heading north with views to the Howgill fells....
....and again
....and again....
....before descending to the upper reaches of the river Rawthey
The river Rawthey...
....and again
A little further down stream I could see a member of the travelling community resting for the night on the way to the Appleby horse fair later in the week
Finally I arrived at the Cautley valley where my lift back to Garsdale was waiting!
The vast expanse of the Northern Pennines is impossible to capture on still photos. This was actually an excellent walk striding out over the high moorlands of the north. The enjoyment of listening to the variety
of birdsong was also enhanced today with acquistion of a new app on my phone which identified the songs of:
Sky Lark, Meadow Pipit, Curlew, Snipe & Golden Plover!
Great to see you identifying birds with the Merlin app Michael. Glad you heard Curlews, my scout Patrol name. Michael
