Skiddaw, Bakestall & the Dash valley

Skiddaw, Bakestall & the Dash valley from Latrigg (Keswick) 11miles 3300ft -

A challenging & exhilarating day on the fells on which, incredibly, I stayed dry all day!

Gaining height on Skiddaw as it comes light after parking at the
Latrigg car park

Looking back down the path to Derwentwater
and the Central Lakeland
fells

Cloud clinging to the tops of the Coledale & Newland fells

Breaks in the cloud over the Vale of Saint John

Looking back to Skiddaw Little Man and Derwentwater as it started
to get windy

Hunkered down in the summit shelter at 3053ft when almost
impossible to stay on my feet!

Overwater and the Cumbrian coast after losing height
and the gale
force wind!

The Northern fells from the summit of Bakestall 2208ft

The way ahead to the Dash valley at the Back'o'Skiddaw

Dead Crags leading up to the Summit of Bakestall

The Dash valley leading up to Skiddaw House & Lonscale Pike

Rainbow on Great Calva at lunch time in front of Skiddaw House

Zooming in on Helvellyn through the Vale of Saint John

Continuing on the upper path through Glenderamackin

A final view of some Autumn colour before arriving back at the car

A Carlin Gill circuit 11 miles 2500ft

No more Wainwrights to climb, so I thought  I would have a look at a few of the Howgill fells around Carlin Gill -

Setting off from under the Lowgill
disused Sedbergh to Tebay
railway viaduct

Crossing the river Lune at Beckfoot

Today's first climb -  Whins End 1260ft

Looking over the Lune valley back to Lowgill Viaduct

The M6 motorway following the valley

I passed some wild Howgill ponies on the climb up Linghaw 1067ft

'The spout' waterfall near the top of Carlin Gill

Looking down the length of Carlin Gill...

...and up towards my next climb to Uldale Head 1706ft

I had a last chance to look down Carlin Gill before the cloud and
rain arrived!

After descending Uldale Head in a downpour, I joined the path
following the River Lune....

....and stopped for lunch in the shelter
of a large Sycamore
tree....

....before crossing back over the River Lune on the return to the car.

My final two Wainwrights: Bessyboot & Castle Crag (Borrowdale) 8.5miles 2500ft

Climbing up beside Big Stanger Gill from the start in the village

of Stonethwaite

Looking back down to Stonethwaite in the Borrowdale valley

Still following the path beside the gill....

....then crossing it but....AAAAAAAHHHHHH
Danny will explain!!!!

Thankfully he survived to see the sunrise over Bull Crag

Shortly after we arrived at the summit cairn of Bessyboot
1908ft....

....time for Danny to get his much deserved brew.

The view looking west over the Base Brown ridge to Fleetwith Pike
and Buttermere fells

We then descended with views to Seatoller
 at the bottom of Honister
pass

After a short drive to Rosthwaite we then climbed the diminutive
but impressive Castle Crag

Arriving at the summit of my FINAL WAINWRIGHT the lowest but
probably the most popular of all the 214 Wainwrights at just a
lowly 951ft

We had some lovely views over the craggy summit down into
Borrowdale....

....and to Derwentwater

A final look back at the steady stream of walkers just visible
climbing the Zig Zags of slate spoil approaching the summit

Footnote:
Michael has climbed all 214 Wainwrights in the Lake District in order to raise money for the Rwanda Group Trust, feeding the poorest of the poor in Rwanda.

Seatallan & Middle fell

Seatallan & Middle Fell from Greendale (Wasdale)
6 miles 2500ft

Two more Wainwrights today just leaving a further two for the final walk

Another wonderful late summer's day fell walk. Thanks Danny for your company today.

Leaving the car parked at Greendale and heading up Greendale Beck

Wastwater and the early morning sun catching Scafell Pike

Having missed the path off to Middle fell we carried on up the gill
heading for Seatallan first

Greendale Tarn

Careful Danny!

The Scafells come in to view as we climbed Seatallan

Seatallan summit trig point 2266ft with the Cumbrian coast behind

Greendale Tarn again with our next climb to Middle Fell rising
above it

Looking further up Greendale to Scoat Fell

The Scafells and Wastwater again from Middle Fell summit 1908ft

Danny posing by the summit cairn

Wasdale Screes rising steeply above Wastwater

Zooming in on Great Gable....

....and Scafell Pike

Finally descending to the car at Greendale hamlet
