 Beckfoot to Shap summit

(In reverse again with another icy north wind behind me)

10.5 miles 2500ft

Setting off from the layby on the A6 at Shap summit
'The other Borrowdale' ie not the Lakeland one
Hucks Bridge crossing Borrow beck
Ashstead fell summit
Looking down into Borrowdale...
....and again
Kendal & Morecambe bay with Arnside Knot
Another view down to Hucks Bridge
Borrow beck again winding through the dale
There wasn't much warmth from the sun today
The Lakeland fells from Mabbin Crag summit
My next summit, 'Old High'....
....but first a walk through the plantation
More of the Lakeland fells from Old High....
....and Whinfell Common to the east....
....with Whinfell Beacon behind

The summit wind shelter next to the beacon

A final climb took me up to Grayrigg Forest summit with the M6 motorway  below
A last look up Borrowdale (The other one again!)...

....before the last stretch south, now with aching legs  back to Beckfoot
Day 5 of my Clapham to Cockermouth walk now completed after another challenging but wonderful day's walking.

Sedbergh to Beckfoot....

(....in reverse, with a forecast of -12c arctic  wind from the north west I decided to do this walk starting from Beckfoot to have the strong cold wind behind me!)

10.5miles 2850ft

Leaving Beckfoot just before the sun rose over the Howgill fells....
....and again
One of the many railway viaducts in this area on the disused line to Tebay
Crossing the river Lune from west to east....
....with my first climb in the Howgills to a sunny
White fell
Crossing the river Lune
Climbing into the fells along Calf Beck
White fell again
Looking back west towards Beckfoot
Many minor ridges lead west off the main summit ridge
Killington lake next to the M6 services of the same name
The trig point on 'The Calf' the highest fell in the Howgills at 2218ft
Snow capped Lakeland fells were just visible on the horizon
The M6 motorway emerging from the 'Lune Gap'

Looking back along the ridge to The Calf from Calders summit
The first walkers I'd seen all day following on the path behind
Now on Winder my last summit of the walk where I finally stopped for lunch with a view to....
 Sedbergh my destination
My decision to walk Day 4 of my walk from Clapham to Cockermouth in reverse proved to be well worth it. The bitter cold north westerly wind was a least coming from behind which made it manageable. Unlike the lakeland fells there are no wind shelters in the Howgills..
A challenging day's walking but never the less very enjoyable and immensely satisfying

Looking west down Barbondale....
.....and again
Now looking ahead to Calf Top
Calf Top summit 2001ft with Dent village just visible
Looking into Dentdale
Lunch time with a distant view of Sedbergh and the Howgill fells
Sedbergh again from Holme Knott
Nearly there
Crossing Sedbergh golf course before....
descending to cross....
The river Rawthey
Entering Sedbergh....
....finishing my walk in the 'dead centre'
Day 3 of my Clapham to Cockermouth walk now completed.
It took a little while for the sun to finally break through today making a welcome change from the recent grey gloom.  A very enjoyable walk with some great views of the Dales
