The North Pennines

A circuit from Melmerby taking in Knapside Hill, Melmerby fell, Fiends fell & Hartside Pass. 12miles 2200ft

Setting off from the attractive village of Melmerby on the main road from Penrith to Alston
Looking up to Melmerby scar
Melmerby beck
The aftermath of the winter storms is still very apparent
Beginning the climb to the scar on the edge of Melmerby fell
Looking west to where the Lakeland mountains were lost in cloud
Summit cairns on Little Knapside hill
Melmerby scar with Cross fell lost in cloud behind
Today's highest point, Melmerby summit cairn 2326ft
The head of South Tynedale from the summit
The summit cairn and shelter on Knapside hill....
.....and now after heading north I arrived at the trig point on Fiends fell
I don't know what this is called but it had a very loud distinctive call
Black fell to the north of Hartside pass
Hartside pass view point. There used be a popular cafe here at the roadside at 1903ft which made it the highest in England, however it burnt down a few years ago. Fortunately I had brought my lunch with me!
A field full of Dandelions
Passing Hazel Rigg farm on the way into Melmerby
This Romany caravan was all on its own but had signs of being lived in
Finally back at Melmerby village green
Very different terrain today from my recent walks but none the less enjoyable and invigorating with about 5 miles of  broad ridge over 2000ft on soft turf with huge open panoramas.
