Saddleworth Edges in the Peak National Park visiting the Dovestone reservoirs & 'The Trinnacle'. 10.5miles 1650ft.

The prospect for seeing much from the tops today looked bleak as I left the car on the Holmfirth road crossing Saddleworth moor
Leaving Greenfield reservoir behind me as I started the climb to the Edges
Not an easy climb up the clough on a bouldery path....
....but well worth it for the view back down
The high level path would now follow the edge for the next 3 or 4 miles with some spectacular  crag scenery on the way....
.....including the dramatic 'Trinnacle' an outstanding 3 separate pinnacles of rock overlooking the reservoirs below....
..... but I wasn't tempted to climb up for the view from the top!
Looking back along the path now the cloud, thankfully, had cleared
I could clearly see the dam on the Yeoman Hey reservoir above the Dovestones reservoir
Further along the path stands the memorial cross to James Platt a former MP for Oldham who died here in an accident with a shot gun in 1857
The view through the Ashway Gap to the reservoirs again
Looking west towards Oldham and Manchester
Greenfield in sunshine with Oldham in the distance
'The Cot' so named because it's only half a cottage! Two of its walls are of solid rock with two constructed walls. The outline of the gable end is carved into the rock.
Lastly before descending into the valley the path skirts passed Chew reservoir the highest in England at 1650ft
My walk finished with a lovely stroll beside Dovestone reservoir with views back up to the edges now clear of cloud....

After an inauspicious start in cloud and drizzle this turned out to a great walk with plenty of interesting features finishing in pleasant sunshine.
A very enjoyable day

A walk closer to home, Rossendale in Lancashire.

Haslingden Grane to Ramsbottom via Ogden Reservoirs, Bull Hill & Peel Tower 12miles 1600ft

Setting off from the layby on the Haslingden Grane road as the sun rose over Rossendale
Looking down the valley to Calf Hey reservoir
The first half of my route was following the Rossendale Way
Calf Hey & Ogden reservoirs

Continuing on the Rossendale Way heading for Bull Hill
Passing through these woods I saw, like last week, a pair of Roe Deer but unfortunately they were too quick for me to photograph!
The paths were extremely well signposted

A nice seat in woods to take a break!

Bull Hill summit trig point with the war memorial poem 'We will remember them'
A nice gentle stroll across the summit in warm sunshine....
....with a view to Pendle Hill
Now that's cheating!
Arriving at Peel Tower above Ramsbottom with Manchester skyline behind
The tower was erected in memory of Sir Robert Peel MP for Bury and Rossendale. He started the first police force known colloquially as 'Peelers'
A bench fit for Meanderthals perhaps? overlooking Ramsbottom
Finally waiting for my lift back to the car by one of the sculptures on the river Irwell Sculpture Trail in the centre of Ramsbottom
A great walk on a perfect February day just half an hour from home for a change!

A glorious day on the fells: A Newlands circuit including Robinson, Newlands Hause, Knott Rigg, Ard Crags & Aitkin Knott. 9miles 3150ft.

Looking up Rigg Beck at the parking area in the Newlands valley
Robinson today's first objective from the start in Newlands valley
Causey Pike catching the early sun
Two Roe deer taking a close interest in me!
Robinson again from the start of the climb
Looking back down the valley

High Snab Bank with Andrew from County Durham who accompanied me on the climb up Robinson. "Thanks Andrew I really enjoyed your company and sharing tales of our fell walking experiences"

Now the serious climbing starts
Andrew again as he starts up the first scramble
Looking back down the walk so far

Once on the summit 2418ft we had views to the cloud inversions to the south and east. Here it's Blencathra sticking out above the cloud.

Scafell Pike and Scafell
Looking south across the summit plateau...
.....and west to Crummock Water and Loweswater....
....and back down the length of the Newlands valley

Descending to Newlands Hause with the climb to Knott Rigg opposite

On the summit of Knott Rigg looking over Sail Pass to Grisedale Pike
Rigg Beck from Ard Crags Summit, my car is parked where Rigg Beck joins Newlands valley at the end of the ridge
The final descent into Newlands from Aitkin Knott
Looking back to Aitkin Knott
Finally back at the car after a wonderful day on the fells. A day when sat in the sun on the summits was more like a warm spring day than mid February
