Harter fell from Dunnerdale returning by Eskdale & Hard Knott Pass 9miles 2800ft
Setting off on the climb up Harter fell from Birks bridge over the river Duddon, Dunnerdale Furness.
It's a relatively short but steep climb through some lovely colourful scenery
Ditto
Looking down on Birks residential outdoor centre
Sitting on the summit of Harter fell 2142ft with good views all around, including Devoke water and the Cumbrian coast.....
....The Scafell range....
Zooming in on Scafell pike....
Seathwaite tarn and the Coniston fells with the 'Old Man' centre leftStarting the descent into Eskdale
A last look back at the summit crags of Harter fell
My route continued on a path above the Esk valley
Zooming in on Bow fell at the head of the valley
The Jubilee bridge at the start of the climb up Hard Knott pass
The path passes Mediobogdum! the remains of Hard Knott Roman fort
The 'Principia' as the latin suggests was the most important and central building in the fort
Looking back west down the very steep road which also crosses Hard Knott pass
Finally the descent into Dunnerdale follows the river Duddon which in parts is deep and often tempts swimmers. I passed a couple of ladies one of whom was being encouraged to go in for a dip with the other one. She suggested it might be too cold but was reassured by the other......as I took my boots off by the car I heard the screams!!!!!
