Day 7 of my Barrow in Furness to Barrowford (East Lancashire) walk

Ribblehead to Settle 15.5miles 1300ft

The early morning train to Carlisle crossing Ribblehead viaduct with Whernside in cloud behind
The sun rises bringing light to Ribblesdale....
....evaporating the mist from the valley
Crossing 'God's Bridge' on the Ribble Way path, so named because its natural formation
The landscape has a lot of these limestone pavements
Passing the stretch of water known as 'The Tarn'....
....before descending to Horton-in-Ribblesdale
....and again....
....Where I joined the Ribble Way riverside path
Looking back to Pen-Y-Ghent
Continuing along the riverside....
....before leaving it at the Langcliffe mill weir
....where I joined to the Pennine Bridleway long distance path...
....as I passed through the pretty Langcliffe village....
....from where I climbed to a vantage point above Settle
Zooming in on Settle railway station....
....before entering the town centre....
....where the market square is a popular stopping place for bikers
Finally I noticed this amusing window box where I stood to wait for my lift back to Ribblehead

A great day's walking down Ribblesdale with some great views and lots of interest. Just 2 days left now to my destination, Barrowford.

Day 6 of my Barrow in Furness to Barrowford Walk

Dent to Ribblehead via Whernside 11.5miles 2200ft

Leaving Dent village the first part of my walk followed the Dales Way trail up Dentdale

Looking back to the village
Starting the climb out of  Dentdale to climb Whernside - one of the fells of the '3 Peaks Challenge'
The sheep were playing 'I'm the King of the Castle'!
Looking across the valley to Arten Gill viaduct which I would be crossing on the train later in the day
Whernside summit ridge has several of these little tarns....
....followed by a final climb to the summit....
.....and again
The summit trig point at 2415ft making it the highest of the 'Dales 30 fells' ie those over 2000ft in the Yorkshire Dales National Park
Starting the descent with Ingleborough on the horizon
....and again
A first sight of the famous Ribblehead viaduct....
....with the timely arrival of a train crossing it
My walk finished at Ribblehead station on the south side of the viaduct where I was catching the train part way back to Dent village
Besides being a passenger line it is also very busy with freight trains
I'm now on the train crossing the viaduct....
.....and again...
....and again....
....and finally alighting at Dent Station which is actually at Cowgill village about 5 miles from Dent! Fortunately I had lift arranged to take me back to my car in Dent village.
A lovely day's walk with a great finish over Whernside and a train ride over the viaduct!

Day 5 of my Barrow in Furness to Barrowford walk:

Killington Lake to Dent, 13miles 900ft

Setting off walking east from J37 on the M6....
....Killington lake just visible on the horizon
Looking back to the M6 motorway with the unamed fell from last week's walk behind
Passing Killington lake....
....and little further on passing Lily mere....
.....followed by the river Lune
Now walking on field paths towards Sedbergh....
....and again
The disused railway viaduct on the outskirts of Sedbergh
A morning break sat in the grass on Sedbergh golf course
Sedbergh just visible across the misty valley with Winder fell behind
My route took me past many pretty little cottages....
....until St Andrew's church Dent came in sight....
....and again
It's a very large church for such a little village
Dent has still retained its cobbled streets....
....and has an interesting heritage museum....
....and cafe where I waited for my lift back to the car
Now well and truly in the Yorkshire Dales the terrain and landscape is less dramatic but is neverless great walking country. Another wonderful day's walking.
