Kirkstone Pass to Windermere
via Caudale Moor, Stoney Cove Pike & Thornthwaite Crag 12miles 2300ft
Setting off from what used to be the Kirkstone Inn which has been undergoing renovation for a couple of years. It now looks like it's been converted into Cottages?
Starting the climb to St Raven's Edge with a view over the pass to Red Screes
The car park at the top off the pass
Stoney Cove Pike summit 2503ft
The western fells of the Kentmere Horseshoe
Looking north to Ullswater from Threshthwaite Mouth....
....before climbing to Thornthwaite Crag summit 2572ft
Looking back to Stoney Cove Pike
Leaving the summit I headed for Froswick & Ill Bell with Kentmere below to the east....
.....and again....
.....descending the tops into the Troutbeck Valley with Troutbeck Tongue & Windermere
Stopped for lunch after completing the descent
Continuing down the valley....
....passing above Limefitt Park
A final look back to the fells before....
.....a walk up Queen Adelaide's Hill for a view over Windermere.
The area of today's walk always has special memories for me from my teenage years. Myself and two fellow scouts from 16th Preston troop twice won the 24hr 'Lakelander' orienteering event starting at Limefitt Park.
The event was a tough test of not only accurate orienteering but also speed and endurance, which one year was undertaken in the most appalling conditions!
I remember it well!
