North Lees Hall (near Hathersage in Derbyshire)

Looking down the Hope valley where the Hall is situated

An explanation of the Hall's history

The hall itself, which was the inspiration for Charlotte Bronte's Thornfield Hall in Jane Eyre. (Thorn - an anagram of 'North', and field - another word for 'lees')

Visitors to the hall were welcomed by volunteers dressed in period costumes

Various rooms in the hall.....

The crenellated tower referred to in the novel

The wooden spiral staircase up the tower

The ruins of the family chapel, which likely hosted the clandestine Catholic Mass post reformation
